After we got off of the Eye we went and had a meal, and afterwards I managed to capture this from the Golden Jubilee bridge.

Really the conditions were ideal and I got lucky with the light. Very little wind, extremely still water in the Thames, which really made this an obvious candidate for the long exposure treatment. However… I’d neglected to bring my tripod. Oops – not doing that again!

Luckily, if you’ve ever been to the bridge, you’d know that the handrails are spaced just far enough that you can slip in a DSLR lens in-between them, and brace the camera against one of the supporting columns. So I got this pretty sharp 4s exposure.

So here we go.

If you ever visit NYC, one thing you need to do is visit Times Square at night. No other time of the day will give it justice, and trust me on that one. One of the truly awesome things though, is that this place is always busy. Doesn’t matter if it’s 4am or 4pm; it will be rammed.

The nice thing is that it’s right next to all the Broadway theatres (which should also be on your list), so it’s pretty easy to go visit. I’m not big on watching theatre productions, but we went to see Spamalot anyway at the Shubert Theatre. Apparently it finishes in early January, so if you’re a Python fan you should get there whilst you still can. There is an awesome restaurant with great cake right next door – we loved it so much, we ate there twice in four days.

Anyway, the idea behind the shot was to get a nice – but different – capture of that commonest of vehicles in Manhatten: the taxi. I stood around for about 40 minutes waiting for another Nikon user to get out of my way before I finally got the shot I wanted. I took the panning shot with the 10-22 to add extra distortion to the motion blur, and also to ensure that most of the cab was out of focus apart from the logo.

Very pleased with this shot in particular, taken about 850ft up on top of the Rockefeller Centre in New York City – otherwise known as the Top of the Rock.

This shot was taken with the 10-22, and was stitched together from about 7 images (4 covering the top, 3 on the bottom). CS3′s Photomerge utility is exceptionally good for this, and the ‘inverted fisheye’ you get from it in this case really adds a lot to the character of the photo.

It was a great day out and the first time I’d been to London in quite some time. The place itself is vast, but there’ll be more about that later.

This particular shot was taken on the way back to the tube. It caught Mark’s eye and we went and had a butchers. To capture a bit more of an “arty” shot I took a long exposure and balanced on the nearby railing. However, I do wish that the tree lights weren’t there; it would have been a lot nicer without them.

As an aside, the 10-22 was absolutely great; I was a little worried that it was too “specialized” for my style of shooting, but it simply didn’t come off all day. For super wide angle architecture and shots like this you can’t beat it.
